Organizing eye camps has always been a critical mission for AODB. Every year five or six eye-camps are held in impoverished
regions of Bihar. Cataract and other minor surgeries are routinely performed by
qualified volunteer doctors. Preventive health care instructional
pamphlets are also handed out for general and common diseases. Each year several
hundred people regain their eyesight and combat other eye diseases through AODB
support.
Here is a memorable excerpt from an eye camp organized by AODB, as recollected
by one of our volunteers. An elderly patient had lost his eyesight and could not afford
medical care because of his poverty. After the eye-camp eye surgery and post
recovery he was able to see his loved ones after a quarter century!! It was an
emotional sight to behold.
AODB volunteers at these eye camps are always overwhelmed by the bright twinkle in the eyes of recovering patients, as well as the sheer joy and happiness of their families. They felt that the cost of $15 per patients were worth a million.
